Dags för fagning i våra gotländska ängsmarker
About the business
Spring is the season for haymaking. Come along and join in! You’ll get some fresh air and a chance to get some exercise, together with others. At the same time, you’ll be helping to keep our ancient cultural heritage alive and ensure our beautiful meadows on Gotland remain in good condition. The meadows of Gotland are ancient farmland. They are the remnants of vast expanses of meadowland, where hay has been harvested throughout the ages to meet the farm’s winter fodder requirements. The yield was smaller than today’s round bales on arable land, but on the other hand, the harvest could be gathered without the need for manure or other inputs. To make it possible to mow the grass in summer and harvest the hay, the meadows must be cleared in spring. Fallen branches and twigs are removed, and leaves that have accumulated are raked away. This is done every spring across the approximately 200 meadows that are maintained throughout the island. In some meadows, open clearing sessions are organised. For example, on Saturday 12 July at 10 am in the Östergarn parish meadow – see the Facebook group ‘Östergarns prästänge’.
