About the business

Open daily (weeks 27–32) from 11am to 3pm. Admission is 60 kr. The creative workshop is open to children and young people who are curious about different forms of artistic expression and want to explore them in a playful way. Here, you’re free to play and act out scenes, dip your brush into a pot of paint or make a film. The Creative Workshop offers both traditional and modern techniques for storytelling using light and sound, animation, stop-motion, text and film. There is also a puppet theatre stage where you can put on performances using hand puppets, ‘flat’ figures or marionettes. Younger children can also take to the stage themselves. Puppets and props are created in the workshop, as are the sound and filmed elements for the performances. The Skaparverkstan at the Bergman Centre on Fårö has been in existence since 2012 and draws inspiration from Ingmar Bergman’s playfulness and creativity. Film, moving images and theatre were young Ingmar’s most important toys even in his childhood. That is why the Creative Workshop is an important part of the Bergman Centre on Fårö.The Creative Workshop was established as part of the ‘The Child and Childhood’ project (2012–2014), funded by the Swedish Inheritance Fund. The fundamental aim of the project was to offer visitors to the Bergman Centre a child’s and young person’s perspective on Ingmar Bergman’s artistry. He himself often said that ‘childhood was his main source of inspiration’ when it came to themes for film and theatre. Central to the ‘The Child and Childhood’ project was the exhibition *The Salon*, which visually brought to life how Ingmar Bergman, even as a boy, created stories using a *Laterna Magica* and a model theatre. These two ‘creative tools’ form the basis of Skaparverkstan, where children, young people and adults can create and tell stories themselves through theatrical performance and moving images. Over the years, Skaparverkstan has developed its own educational approach, in which children aged three to four create on their own or together with siblings, friends and parents. During the summer season, Skaparverkstan is open to the public for five hours a day, whilst during the spring and autumn seasons there has been a range of workshops and seminars for various groups of professional adults. These have ranged from practitioners and researchers working on issues relating to children’s and young people’s own filmmaking to unaccompanied young people and children, as well as young people and adults who have experienced domestic violence or violence in other contexts. The Creative Workshop is staffed by experienced educators who are also professional filmmakers, artists, animators and puppeteers. With their support and inspiration, visitors to the workshop create stories using images, animation, stop-motion, sound and light. There is also a puppet theatre stage where performances are created using hand puppets and other figures. Young children can take to the stage themselves. Puppets and props are made in the workshop, as are the sound effects and filmed segments for the performances. On the Facebook page ‘Skaparverkstan på Fårö’, videos and other material produced by children and young people in the workshop are published – with the directors’ permission, of course. Before and after the summer season, we organise workshops for groups of children, young people and adults at Skaparverkstan. We also welcome school classes as part of the ‘Skapande skola’ programme. It is advisable to plan the content and format in advance with our educators, Jessica Lundeberg and Kristina Frank.
