France, Belgium. Director: Anne Fontaine. 120 mins. The film explores the story behind one of the most famous works in the history of music, Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. It portrays his life, the women in his life, his music and all the sounds that constantly capture his attention. It begins with the dancer Ida walking through the mist to meet Maurice in a roaring factory hall. He wants her to understand that all the sounds of the machines are music to him. Four Mothers Ireland, 2025 Director Darren Thornton. 89 mins. Edward, a writer who looks after his elderly mother, is on the verge of a breakthrough whilst under pressure to go on a book tour in the US. When his friends suddenly leave their mothers with him whilst on a Pride trip to Spain, he is forced to cope with four strong and very different women over a chaotic weekend. It Was Just an Accident, Iran, 2025 Director: Jafar Panahi 103 mins Whilst driving through the night with his pregnant wife and daughter, Eghbal accidentally hits a dog and is forced to stop at a remote garage. The mechanic on site, Vahid, recognises Eghbal – as the man he believes tortured him whilst he was in prison. The seemingly trivial accident quickly spirals into a vortex of paranoia, a thirst for revenge and increasingly absurd events, drawing in several people who bear their own scars from the regime’s violence. Small Things Like These Ireland, 2024 Director: Tim Mielants 98 mins In the run-up to Christmas 1985, coal merchant Bill Furlong makes a discovery at a local convent that forces him to confront secrets in the Irish town of New Ross. The year is 1985 and Bill Furlong witnesses a young woman being forced into the town’s convent against her will, whilst memories from his childhood haunt him.In the Heart of France, 2024 Director: Anne-Sophie Bailly 95 mins Mona lives with her adult son Joël, who has an intellectual disability and works at a specialist facility. He falls in love with his colleague Océane, who also has a disability. When Mona discovers that Océane is pregnant, the relationship between mother and son is put to the test.Classic: Wings of Desire West Germany, et al., 1987 Director: Wim Wenders 128 mins The two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, wander invisibly through the city, listening to the thoughts of Berliners. Although angels are meant to be mere observers, and not to interact physically with the human world, Damiel falls in love with a real-life circus performer. He is now considering giving up his status as an angel and becoming human – that is, mortal. The screenplay for the film was written by the director Wim Wenders together with the Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Peter Handke. The Master and Margarita, Russia, 2025 Director: Michael Lockshin 156 mins 1930s Moscow. A famous writer is censored by the Soviet state: his novel is banned and the premiere of his new play about Pontius Pilate is suddenly cancelled. Within days, he becomes a pariah. Overcome by despair, he begins to write a new novel – a daring satire in which the devil, Woland, arrives in Moscow to exact surreal and poetic revenge on those responsible for the author’s downfall. Although he knows this work can never be published in the Soviet Union, his muse Margarita encourages him to write it anyway, regardless of the consequences. The film interweaves Bulgakov’s novel with his own biography, creating a narrative that unfolds across three parallel timelines: the semi-realistic Moscow of the 1930s, the fantastical future Moscow of the Master’s novel, and Jerusalem in the year 33 AD.
