About the business

You are welcome to explore the exhibition ‘Royal Mail’ at Bottarve Museigård, which opens at 12.00 on Thursday 6 June. It will then be open every day from 11.00 to 17.00 between 6 June and 30 August. In September, the exhibition will be open during the museum’s normal opening hours. Explore the history of the postal service in southern Gotland at the museum. When Gotland became part of Sweden in 1645, there was no regular passenger service to the mainland. However, between northern Öland and western Gotland, there was an organised postal service run by post farmers who risked their lives crossing the Baltic Sea in open rowing and sailing boats. The first post office on Gotland opened in Visby in 1698. Almost all mail was official correspondence; it was not until 1820 that it became possible to send private letters via the so-called ‘Crown Post’.At the exhibition, you can, amongst other things, read a correspondence from November 1868, when Lars Odman from Fide wrote home to tell of his meeting with his brother in Mauritius.
