Gallery Ars Gotlandica – Elin Gardell Sundström, SPILL

Letting the material take the lead is something she is passionate about, and here she has set aside all thoughts of function, instead allowing the leftover material to be transformed into something completely different. Movement, lightness and a fresh start are words that have been part of the process, and she hopes that this approach might prompt reflection on what ‘waste’ actually is, when a material is considered used up, and how we can make better use of the Earth’s resources before we return them.Elin was born and raised on Gotland; under the name Rosa Räven, she usually makes woollen blankets from wool that is not fine enough for other textile production – the woollen blanket is at the heart of her business.Elin has long been fascinated by the versatility of wool and is appalled by how much goes to waste; she wants to be part of a change for Swedish wool.Elin studied textiles at Gotland Folk High School, and has completed courses in Sustainability Development in Textiles/Fashion and Circular Design at the Nordic Textile Academy. She runs courses in wool spinning and keeps her own flock of Klövsjö sheep at home._________________________________________________________Elin Gardell Sundström is a textile artisan whose favourite material is wool. Elin has playfully created works from the ‘waste’ generated in her production process. She is deeply passionate about letting the material itself guide the creative process. In this work, she has set aside all thoughts of function and instead allowed the leftover material to transform into something entirely different. Movement, lightness and renewal are themes that have characterised the process, and she hopes this perspective may inspire reflection on what waste really is: when is a material truly considered used up, and how can we make better use of the Earth’s resources before returning them to nature? Born and raised on the island of Gotland, Elin works under the name Rosa Räven, where she primarily produces woollen duvets made from wool that is not fine enough for other textile production. The woollen duvet is at the heart of her business. Elin has long been fascinated by the versatility of wool and is troubled by how much of it goes to waste. She is committed to being part of a positive change for Swedish wool. She studied textiles at Gotland Folk High School and later completed programmes in Sustainable Development in Textiles and Fashion and Circular Design at the Nordic Textile Academy. Elin also teaches wool spinning courses and keeps her own flock of Klövsjö sheep at home.
